Coir log

Also called a coir fibre roll, coir roll or bio-log

The standard log for bank toes, lake shores and slope breaks. It absorbs wave and current energy, traps sediment and gives plants a protected place to root, then breaks down as the roots take over.

Installation

Laying it right

  1. 01Prepare the bedClear rocks and debris so the log touches the soil along its whole length. Work at low water.
  2. 02Bed it inSet the log at the base of the bank, around the normal water level, in a trench. Deeper bedding resists being lifted.
  3. 03Stake both sidesWooden stakes about 5 × 5 cm and 0.9–1.2 m long: two at each end, then alternating sides about every 30 cm.
  4. 04Tie and plantTie across the log between stakes, drive stakes flush, lace logs end to end and bury the ends. Plant plugs about every 30 cm.

Questions

About Coir log

What diameter do I need?

Smaller logs suit sheltered sites; larger diameters suit exposed sites and steeper banks. Send us the water conditions and bank height and we will recommend a size.

Can logs be joined?

Yes. Logs are laced end to end with natural twine, and the end logs are buried or tied into the bank so water cannot get behind them.

Do I need a permit?

Work below the high-water line often needs one. Check with your local authority before installation.
