Coir Erosion Control Blankets

Full ground cover for bare soil while the seed takes hold.

03 · Blankets & Mats

Cover for the first season

Coir erosion control blankets, also called coconut fibre blankets, and coir mats are a dense layer of coir fibre held together and laid flat over bare or newly seeded ground. Where woven geotextile is an open mesh, a blanket gives fuller cover, shielding seed and soil from heavy rain and strong sun.

They suit gentle to moderate slopes, verges and landscaping, where the job is to get vegetation established evenly. Blankets are supplied to your project requirements.

Why it works

What coir blankets do on site.

  • Shields from Rain

Absorbs raindrop impact so seed and soil stay in place.

  • Keeps Seed Moist

Shades the seedbed and holds moisture through dry spells.

  • Even Establishment

Full cover helps vegetation come up evenly across the area.

  • Lies Flat

Conforms to the ground for close contact with the soil.

  • Quick to Lay

Rolled out over prepared ground and pinned in place.

  • Returns to the Soil

Breaks down as plants establish. No plastic left behind.

How coir blankets compare

Blankets differ mainly in the fibre, which sets how long they last and how steep a slope they can hold.

Installation

Installed in four steps

Standard practice for this product. Your project drawings and local specifications always take priority.

  1. 01

    Prepare and seed

Grade the surface smooth, remove stones and clods, then seed and fertilise before the blanket goes down.

  2. 02

    Anchor the top

Bury the top end in a trench about 15 cm deep, staple it, backfill and compact.

  3. 03

    Roll out

Unroll down the slope in full contact with the soil, without stretching. Overlap edges by about 10 cm and ends shingle-style.

  4. 04

    Staple

Fix with staples or pins in a regular pattern, more densely on steep ground and along every overlap.

Natural erosion control for every edge, slope and shoreline your project has to hold.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is a blanket different from woven geotextile?

A blanket is a dense layer of coir fibre that gives full ground cover. Woven geotextile is an open mesh of coir yarn, stronger and better suited to steeper slopes and moving water.

Where are coir blankets used?

On bare or newly graded ground, road verges, gentle to moderate slopes, and landscaping areas that need even vegetation cover.

How are they installed?

The ground is prepared and seeded, then the blanket is rolled out over it and pinned down with pins or staples, with edges overlapped and tucked in.

What sizes are available?

Blankets and mats are supplied to your project requirements. Send the area and site conditions and we will confirm the specification.
