Coir wattle

Also called an erosion control wattle, fibre roll or sediment log

A roll of coir fibre in netting, laid across a slope along the contour. Each row shortens the distance water can run downhill, so it never gathers the speed to carry soil away, and silt settles out behind it.

  • Fibre100% coir
  • LaidAlong the contour
  • Spacing3 to 15 m by slope
  • SizeTo project

Best for

  • Cut and fill slopes on construction sites
  • Long slopes that need shortening
  • Grade breaks, tops and toes of slopes
  • Sites where natural netting is preferred

Plan your order

How much do you need?

–rows
–metres of wattle

Rows at the top, the toe and at Caltrans spacing in between. Add rows at grade breaks and a little extra so ends can turn uphill.

Sizes

Sizes are agreed per project. Send us drawings, lengths or areas and we will confirm the specification and quantities before quoting.

Installation

Laying it right

  1. 01Mark the contourMark lines across the slope along the contour, at the spacing for your slope, plus the top, toe and every grade break.
  2. 02Cut a shallow trenchSet each roll in a shallow trench so water cannot run underneath it.
  3. 03Stake itDrive stakes through or beside the roll so it stays in firm contact with the ground.
  4. 04Turn the ends uphillTurn the ends slightly upslope so water cannot run around them, and clear trapped sediment as it builds up.

Questions

About Coir wattle

How many wattles do I need?

Use the calculator on this page: enter the slope length, width and steepness for an estimate of rows and total length.

Do wattles stop landslips?

No. Wattles control surface erosion. A slope that is moving needs a geotechnical solution first.

How long do they last?

Fibre rolls typically last from six months to five years depending on the material. Coir sits at the longer-lasting end.
